Strengthening Relationships

Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, walked the face of the earth over four thousand years ago. John 3:16(NLT) says, “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” Through Jesus Christ, we learn how much God loves us. His only begotten Son is His greatest treasure, and He gave him to the world. Anyone that has been given the privilege and honor of being someone’s parent or guardian can relate to this. As responsible and supportive parents and guardians, our love for our children is beyond what we could have ever imagined. Our hearts swell with love for them, and we want to protect them at all cost. We would do just about anything for their well-being. Well, God’s love is exponentially higher and deeper than ours. The love He has for His Son and the unity they share is nothing short of perfection, yet God gave His Son to be sacrificed for our sins. He did this because He loves us that much. It’s almost beyond comprehension.

This not only demonstrates the worth and value God has placed on our lives, but it also demonstrates in high-definition technicolor the kind of relationship that God wants with us. Jesus Christ shed his blood to cleanse our sins for all eternity, and not only this, he made it possible for us to have the kind of relationship with Heavenly Father that even Adam and Eve didn’t have. Ephesians 1:13-14(MSG) tells us, “It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit. This signet from God is the first installment on what’s coming, a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life.” Through Jesus Christ, God placed His Spirit in our body temples and then sealed us with His Holy Spirit! And as amazing as this is, it’s just the first installment of all that God has for us—all that is to come.

God wanted a family, and because of the pattern He set up, children are produced from the seed of their fathers. You and I couldn’t have done this. We didn’t set it up this way, Heavenly Father did. Genesis 1:11, 21(NLT) tells us, “Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened. 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird—each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.” Birds can’t produce monkeys, and elephants can’t produce giraffes. The pattern that God set forth is that every living thing produces after its own kind.

In this same manner, God created us in His image. We were created to be like Him. Why? So that we could have fellowship and relationship with Him. He wanted a family and we’re it! Genesis 1:26-27(NLT) tells us, “26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” God created us to be like Him, and 1John 4:8 tells us that God is love. Therefore, you and I have no other choice but to conclude that love is a big part of who we are and what we were put on earth to do.

God’s love is life! God’s love expressed through Jesus Christ is the foundation of our lives, and relationships are the houses we build on that foundation. As we build and strengthen relationships with others, we are privileged to be conduits of Heavenly Father’s love, because when His love is expressed through the example of Jesus Christ, it is the most powerful force in the universe. God’s love creates! It motivates and produces the most wonderful results. Our responsibility as His children is to make sure we move through His love. This is how we continue to remain in harmony with God’s agenda, however, expressing His unconditional love to others is sometimes where many of us get stuck. For those who love us back and are friendly towards us, we find that being loving is very easy. But when it comes to those that have hurt us and are not supportive towards our well-being, we tend to disconnect and cut ourselves off. We stop the flow of God’s love towards them, and therefore cut off an avenue for God’s love to flow into us as well.

Our self-preservation reflexes are engrained in our makeup. They come baked in, but as we mature spiritually, we should recognize that God is our Protector, and the confidence and knowledge of this should dissuade us from putting up walls and keeping them up. Of course, there are certain individuals within every family unit that are detrimentally toxic, and we must keep our distance, but as followers of Jesus Christ, He’s the One who decides this. Our posture must be one of obeying HIS guidance. Some individuals in our families are nothing like the people we’ve made them out to be or that others have made them out to be. We’ve ostracized them, ignored and neglected them, and casted them aside. It could be that they are the very link to God’s plan for bringing His healing to issues within our bloodlines, and because of a trick of the devil, we’re missing the blessing of God. We’ve allowed roadblocks, things like negative attitudes, feelings, and thoughts to operate in our hearts, and these things have blocked God’s love from moving through us. We can’t see people the way He sees them, and we have to change this.

None of us understand the magnitude of the way internal blockers can impede the flow of God’s love from moving through us. The decisions we make to hold on to fear, shame, anger, resentment, and hurt are so costly because they affect generations to come. Negativity does not remain dormant or stagnant. It spreads, but praise God, so does His love. His love not only spreads through us, but it bountifully impacts everything and everyone it touches.

Our sojourn on this earth provides us with opportunities to learn the spiritual lessons of God’s love through our relationship with Him. You and I can’t dictate what those lessons are, but we can be assured that the first place they will start is within our own families. As believers and followers of Christ, we can’t afford to overlook the reality that his love working through us is an integral part of our destinies. As we lean completely on Jesus Christ, and remain committed to follow his lead, he will direct us to strengthen our relationships first with God, then within our family units, and finally with our relationships with others.■

  • Giving Praise and Honor to God
When we find ourselves in a rut, experiencing a sense of stagnation and lack of inspiration, it may be because we’ve lost sight of both God’s nature and our identity in Him. Many believers, despite professing faith, seem devoid of the genuine enthusiasm that should accompany salvation. They might go through the motions of being a Christian, but deep down, they’re not really feeling that connection between loving God and truly worshiping Him. And if our spiritual outlook hasn’t broadened, then we’re missing out on all the amazing things our Heavenly Father has in store for us. He doesn’t want…
  • Toxic Patterns and Dating Mistakes
When Tabby was ten years old, her father left her mother and her two younger brothers, but she wasn’t sad about it at all. Her mother worked two jobs, and Tabby and her brothers would pick up odd jobs in the neighborhood on the weekends when they got old enough. They were struggling, but her mother’s love for them made their lives so sweet that it didn’t feel like a struggle at all. Her father constantly complained about how unhappy he was when he lived with them. He said that his family was the reason he couldn’t be the success…
  • God’s Grace
Sonship rights are all the rights and privileges we received when we gave our lives to Jesus Christ and made him Lord over them. They are so numerous that we couldn’t possibly name them all, and the Good News is that God has given us sonship rights because of our faith and love for Him. We couldn’t and didn’t do anything to earn them. Ephesians 1:6(KJV) tells us that through His grace and power, He has “made us accepted in the beloved.”  Ephesians 1:7(NLT) says that our Heavenly Father “is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our…
  • God Is Unchangeable
We can only rise in life to the level of our believing, so the level in which we are willing to believe and trust God’s Word and the promises it contains will determine the quality of our lives. In John 10:10(NKJV), our Heavenly Father set the standard for the kind of existence He wants us to have. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, tells us in this verse, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have [it] more abundantly.” This is…
  • God’s Love Restores Relationships
For the benefit of our lives on earth, our Heavenly Father, in His infinite wisdom and grace, has established and provided many types of relationships. He designed them to support and bless every individual from childhood through adulthood. Sometimes we forget that it was Him that established the first marital union, and He made it the starting point that brought all the other relationships into play. Parents, grandparents, children, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, all of them are possible because of the brilliance of our Heavenly Father. In His Word, Acts 17:26(NLT) tells us, “From one man he created all…
  • A Future to Hope for
“I know I’m going to hell.” One of Christopher’s hanging partners, Jeff, said jokingly when they were all talking about faith in Jesus Christ. Jeff’s grandmother took him to church every Sunday when he was little. It was where he discovered his talent for singing. He loves Gospel music, but no longer has a passion for its message. He indulges as many pleasures these modern times afford him, and although his best friend, Christopher, and their other buddies love the Lord, Jeff says he doesn’t see himself living a Christian life. In the past, Jeff has been the kind of…
  • It Is Better to Give Than to Receive
When it comes to society and its beliefs and standards, there are so very many things that do not honor the Lord, but thankfully, the holidays towards the end of the year still point to His goodness. Being thankful for the abundance of God’s blessings, gathering with family and friends, and giving to others are a big part of our responsibility and privilege as God’s children. He’s blessed us with the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and commanded us to model ourselves after him. When he walked upon this earth, giving to others was a daily practice…
  • Choose God’s Love
If choosing love were always easy, everyone would do it, because the benefits of choosing to love always outweighs everything else. However, the reality is that choosing to love others rather than repaying them the same unkindness they’ve doled out to us is not always easy. We know that our Master Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:39 to turn the other cheek, but many saved, sanctified, and Spirit-filled individuals haven’t yet learned to do this. In Mark 12:30(NLT), Jesus Christ commanded us, “And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind,…
  • Don’t Give in to Self-Condemnation
So much of our behaviors and attitudes stem from feeling bad about ourselves. This is the secret that some of us keep neatly tucked away from prying eyes. We don’t want others to know that we’re filled with anxiety about what we perceive as our inadequacies, so we hide behind a mask. That’s not a sustainable solution. After a while, the anxiety, shame, and sadness come to the surface, and when they do, we’re left with only two alternatives. We can either choose to go deeper into hiding or we can lean on God and His Word and refuse to…
  • Deepening Your Relationship with God
Sometimes, we meet people and instantly we click. We might have completely opposite interests and appear to be the most unlikely set of friends, but there’s just something unexplainable that causes us to be drawn to certain individuals. The old saying tells us that opposites attract, and there might be something to this. God’s blessings are as unique as each of us, and its wonderful when our hearts welcome this truth. All of us have preconceived notions about others, and sometimes the stereotypes that are rampant in society get into our heads. They can negatively color the way we see…
  • Grow in the Love of Jesus Christ
When we feel insecure, we look for security in relationships with others, and sometimes the people in those relationships let us down. We’re so disappointed by this that our insecurity grows. Wondering if there’s anyone that can truly understand and relate to us, sometimes we lose our confidence in love altogether. We allow this tremendous God-given potential to take a backseat to our lack of confidence. We forget how dearly and how much our Heavenly Father loves us. The reality that Christ died the most humbling, humiliating, and horrific death so that we could know the depth of God’s love…
  • You Must Stand Corrected
“But consider the joy of those corrected by God! Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin.” Job 5:17(NLT) The Apostle Paul said in Romans 12:3(NLT), “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.” It’s a mistake to think that we can live a successful Christian life without the guidance and leadership of the Holy Spirit. He is our Teacher, Comforter, Helper, and…
  • God Always Knows Best
“And I heard a voice say, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.’ “‘No, Lord,’ I replied. ‘I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure or unclean.’ “But the voice from heaven spoke again: ‘Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.’ This happened three times before the sheet and all it contained was pulled back up to heaven.” Acts 11:7-10 (NLT) All of us have patterns of behaviors that we have learned since birth, and some of them are deeply entrenched in our way of thinking. We have assumed that these behaviors…
  • The Greatest Priority of Life
Jesus Christ said in John 10:10(NKJV), “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Our precious and powerful Lord and Savior gave his life on the cross to make a more than abundant life available to everyone, not just to those who are religious or those who believe in him. He sacrificed his life for us all; believers and unbelievers alike, because this is the Will of God. Our Heavenly Father wants everyone to live an incredibly blessed…
  • The Kingdom of God Is at Hand
From the very beginning, with Adam, the first man, and throughout human history, our Heavenly Father has been more than incredibly patient with us. His plan all along was to bring us into His family through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Now that He’s done that through the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ, we are witnessing the unfathomable nature of His power as He brings everything under Christ. Colossians 2:10(NLT) says, “So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” Before our union through Christ and because of Adam’s…
  • Your Relationship with God Isn’t Dependent on Feelings
It’s long been said that women are more emotional than men, and I’m not so sure that’s true. As someone that’s been married for many years, I believe men are equally as emotional as women, but expressing those emotions is another story altogether. More likely than not, men are taught to hide their emotions and hold them inside. Many of them do this, and it drives a lot of women nuts. In our significant relationships, and with others as well, our dependence on emotions is a societal norm. It’s now entrenched in the way we make choices and decisions, and…
  • In Relationship with God
Whether it’s marriage or a relationship that’s not quite there yet, our significant relationships can teach us a lot about the kind of relationship that our Heavenly Father desires with us. In our personal lives, when we find the person that God has ordained to walk with us through life, it’s exciting and fulfilling. It makes our souls feel good because not only do we like this person, but we want to spend time with them. We love being in their presence and look forward to the relationship deepening through communication, affection, respect and honor. We’re created by God to…
  • God Is Willing and Able to Bless Us
There is no doubt that prayer connects us to our all-powerful, all-knowing, Almighty God. No matter our sins and past mistakes, and regardless of our conditions, if we place our trust in Him, God is willing to help us through whatever we face in life. No matter how challenging our problems and obstacles are, He alone is able to solve them. He is willing to deliver us to such a degree that we are spiritually stronger, our faith is greater, and our relationship with Him is more intimate than we ever thought it could be. He wants an intimate relationship…
  • In Awe and Reverence of God
Effective communication is so revered in our society that it is widely considered to be an art form. It’s a skill that is coveted by most because there can be no doubt that it opens doors of opportunities. It allows us to exceed our expectations. Job interviews are mastered, relationships are successful, and advancement is propelled exponentially by effective communication, so it behooves us all to do our best to communicate well. We may not reach the level of comfortably speaking publicly before hundreds of people, but we should at least endeavor to express ourselves in a manner where our…
  • The Blessing of Friendship
Brenda and Dorothy have been friends for over thirty years, but lately their friendship has been strained. Together, they’ve been through thick and thin, and everyone who knows them knows you probably won’t see one without the other. In her mid-fifties, Dorothy has never been married, but Brenda was married before they even met. Her husband passed away almost five years ago, and to say that she was devastated is an understatement. Dorothy was there for her every step of the way, and Brenda depended on her more than any friend should. Recently, Dorothy met someone new and they are…
  • Loving One Another
1John 4:19(NLT) says, “We love each other because he loved us first.” This is such an important verse to our relationship with God. 1John 4:16 tells us that God is love. He’s the Originator of perfect love, and this perfect love can only come from Him. As human beings, we are incapable of giving each other and giving ourselves real love if we do not accept God’s love. We’re His children, and He tells us to depend totally on Him because He is the Source of all good things, and He will provide for our every need. We are to…
  • God Is Our Father
El Shaddai, El Elyon, Adonai, Yahweh, Jehovah Jireh; these are just a few of God’s names that are revealed in His Word. They have varied meanings and all point to His sovereignty, majesty, power, and love. They reveal a facet of His being that comforts and reassures us of His nature and goodness. However, when it comes to His names, there is none more meaningful and precious to Him and us as the name “Father”. God is our Heavenly Father, and He’s given us His Word so that we can know Him. He wants us to understand that our relationship…
  • Spend Quality Time with God
It takes more than one individual to have a relationship, and our Heavenly Father set it up this way. Romans 5:8 tells us that while we were still sinners, God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to offer his life for our sins. John 3:16(NLT) “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” There can be no doubt in our minds of God’s enormous love for us, because He gave His most precious treasure to save us all….
  • What It Takes for Him to Love You
The one piece of knowledge that anyone seeking marriage should know is the degree to which darkness can be operating in the person they might choose. Yes, I know, this isn’t the optimism people want to hear. They want to go wherever their heart leads them, but God’s wisdom teaches us that the heart can lead us down the path of serious trouble. We need to know the truth because Jesus Christ tells us in John 8:32 that only the truth can set us free. We will not be free by believing a lie. God tells us in Hosea 4:6…
  • Pursue God Diligently
I’ve told Maya that I think she’s too smart for her own good. There are some people that have a kind of wisdom and savvy that exceeds ‘book smart’. They just organically see beyond the surface and figure out the problems under the hood. This is Maya’s specialty. It’s also the reason that many find her intimidating, especially the men she’s dated. Her relationships start out well, but no game goes undetected with Maya, and she calls it like she sees it. She’s a very caring and compassionate person, and she wants very much to find the man God has…
